The Japanese royal family; symbol of unity.

The Japanese royal family is the monarchy of Japan, which is currently headed by Emperor Naruhito. The Japanese monarchy is the oldest hereditary monarchy in the world, with a lineage that dates back to 660 BC. The role of the royal family in Japan has evolved over the centuries, and today, they serve as a symbol of national unity and continuity.

The Japanese imperial family consists of the Emperor, his immediate family, and other members of the extended family. The current Emperor, Naruhito, ascended to the throne on May 1, 2019, following the abdication of his father, Emperor Akihito.

The Emperor is considered to be the symbol of the unity of the Japanese people and has no political power. The current emperor’s role is largely ceremonial, and he performs many public duties, such as receiving foreign dignitaries and attending various ceremonies and events.

The Imperial Household Agency (Kunaicho) manages the affairs of the royal family and operates the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, which is the primary residence of the Emperor and his family. The agency also oversees the maintenance of various imperial properties throughout Japan, as well as the planning and execution of the many ceremonial events that the imperial family participates in.

The immediate family of the Emperor consists of his wife, Empress Masako, and their daughter, Princess Aiko. The Emperor also has two younger brothers, Crown Prince Fumihito and Prince Hitachi. Crown Prince Fumihito is the next in line for the throne, followed by his son, Prince Hisahito.

The extended family of the Emperor includes several other members, such as his cousins, nieces, and nephews. One notable member of the extended family is Princess Mako, the Emperor’s niece, who made headlines in 2017 when she announced her engagement to a commoner, which sparked a debate about whether women should be allowed to retain their royal status upon marriage.

The Japanese royal family holds a special place in Japanese culture, and they are respected and revered by many Japanese people. The royal family’s traditional dress, ceremonies, and customs are deeply rooted in Japan’s history and traditions, and they continue to be an important part of the country’s cultural heritage.
